She was born in a rural environment where she had contact with nature, in Sarrià. He studied at Eiximenis School, and combined his studies with private drawing classes, which at first hid to her mother. Her secret came to light when she rejected the teachings of the practical arts teacher, saying that she "knew more than the teacher", and was expelled from school. When her mother realized her daughter's artistic vocation, she enrolled her in private classes with Joan Orihuel. She began with traditional art and at the age of 17 and she made her first exhibition at the Sala de la Rambla in Girona with three other students. Two years later, in 1946, the same room hosted an exhibition which she did alone. In 1950 she exhibited in Barcelona under the name Grup de Girona, one of her most important exhibitions. In 1960 she promoted the 1st Drawing Fair in the Plaça del Vi in Girona, coinciding with the Funfairs and Festivals of Sant Narcís.

Although art brought her to many places around the world and gained many fame, in 1973 she made a popular polychrome altarpiece on the outer walls of the municipal market in Salt (Girona), and has remarkable monuments in Torroella de Montgrí and Badalona. He exhibited in Catalonia (in places such as Girona, Barcelona or L'Escala), Spain (Valencia, Madrid, Sevilla, etc.) and the rest of the world (Argentina, United States, Cuba, France, Germany or Mexico, among others).

At present, as a posthumous tribute, the Emília Xargay Municipal Library of Sarrià de Ter was baptised with her name.
