Year of approval: 1965

Length: 458 metres

Location: Est, 17007

She was born in the Mas Preses in Sant Daniel in 1874 and she decided to study education in the Barcelona University and become a teacher. She got the Superior Teacher title with an “A” in 1891, when she wasn’t even 17.

She presented for the public examinations in 1892, and she was based in Torre Gironella (Berguedà), where she taught for four years earning only 825 “pesetas” annually (4’96€). She presented for the public exams another time in 1897, so she could work in a better school and with a better salary, and this time she was based in the Assistance of the school for girls nº3 in Barcelona for almost seven years (1897-1904). Voluntarily she moved to Olot so she could be nearer her family, but she stayed there only for three years (1904-1907). There she had had three recognised jobs  for the Local Council and the Provincial Council from the Public Institution, and also she took part of the Teachers Association form the region, being its vice president. In 1907 she applied for teaching in Girona.

She did it at a time when Girona didn't have a public school for girls, but she got a job place in one of the unitary schools in the city, the Teresa Balot and Josefa Casals nº2. It was located in the Sant Francesc Street, in a local that, although it didn’t have the right conditions for teaching, the quality of Carme's education made the school becoming known in the society of that Onyar River side and it had a problem of oversaturation. The father of her, Lluís Auguet, that was a constructor, offered a plot of land to the Girona Local Government for building a school according that they would return him the money by mensual payments. The school, that was known as Doña Carmen’s School, was opened in 1908 and she was its headmistress until 1944, except for the three years of the Civil War, when she was disqualified and incarcerated during some months, as she was dismissed because of being considered indifferent to the system (1936-1939).

In a period when social conventions and religious institutions were associated as one thing, it appeared a public school that was different from the ones that existed in the city, where people made no social distinctions between any of the students, and someone from the upper class could sit next to so someone from the lower class. She knew how to teach the girls with good behaviour, with respect to their superiors and communal living. Religion had an important paper in the girls education and every year, as a March closing ceremony a party dedicated to the Virgin was done. During her years at the school she received many recognitions from different institutions.

With the Republic arrival, the school had to accept some changes, suppressing the Religion subject as an example. In 1933 Doña Carmen’s Unitary School turned to be the Eiximenis Graduated School, that unificated some of the unitary girls schools.

When Carme got retired, the Girona Local Government accorded hanging a portrait of the teacher in the classroom that she had ran and giving the name “Carme Auguet” to the first female group that was created in the city, which was accomplished when her name was given to the school group of Pont Major.  In 1944 she was named “favourite son” of the town, her portrait was hung in a honor place in the functions hall and the name of the neighbourhood “Veïnat de Dalt” was changed to “Veïnat de Doña Carmen”, which nowadays is known as a street. The street name’s plaque was put at the house where she was born.

During the same year the Provincial Inspection of First Teaching did a tribute and gave her 37.323 collected “pesetas”, the sufficient amount of money for creating a scholarship destined to paying the studies in the Girona Seminary for a teacher’s child. The scholarship is called “Doña Carme Auguet”.

In 1945 she was given the Alfons X Cross and in 1977 her graduated students did a tribute to her, at the same time when the National Carme Auguet School was opened, located at Pont Major.
